Through the Fog and into the Sun

Event date: July 25, 2010

For days on end I didn’t see the sun. I was staying in Lucia on the Big Sur Coast, 25 miles from even a small town. One of the locals said they had been fogged in for over two weeks and that if I wanted to see the sun, I would have to drive up into the mountains, through the fog.

As I drove up the mountain road, I thought that this experience was a wonderful metaphor for life; you must be willing to go into and through the fog in order to see the sun. I’ll be developing this idea during our Sunday morning Celebration. I’m not quite sure where it will all lead, but I invite you to join in the adventure and the discussion. Here are some quotes about fog and sun:

“Living without faith is like driving in a fog.”
Proverb

“Let us go in; the fog is rising.”
Emily Dickinson (American Poet who has been called the New England mystic, 1830-1886)

“Like a man travelling in foggy weather, those at some distance before him on the road he sees wrapped up in the fog, as well as those behind him, and also the people in the fields on each side, but near him all appears clear, though in truth he is as much in the fog as any of them.”
Benjamin Franklin (American Statesman, Scientist, Philosopher, Printer, Writer and Inventor. 1706-1790)

“It is not the clear-sighted who rule the world. Great achievements are accomplished in a blessed, warm fog.”
Joseph Conrad (English novelist, 1857-1924)

Writing is like driving at night in the fog. You can only see as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.
E. L. Doctorow

Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.
Buddha

We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature – trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence… We need silence to be able to touch souls.
Mother Teresa

Thought the sun is gone, I have a light.
Kurt Cobain

Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.
Pablo Picasso

A leaf fluttered in through the window this morning, as if supported by the rays of the sun, a bird settled on the fire escape, joy in the task of coffee, joy accompanied me as I walked.
Anais Nin

People are like stained – glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their true beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within.
Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world’s joy.
Henry Ward Beecher

Behold, my friends, the spring is come; the earth has gladly received the embraces of the sun, and we shall soon see the results of their love!
Sitting Bull

The earth has received the embrace of the sun and we shall see the results of that love.
Sitting Bull

  1. Hey Daniel, this is one of my favorite quotes along the lines “hidden treasure” –

“What is essential is invisible to the eye.” from Saint-Exupery’s – The Little Prince

  2. Daniel,
Thanks for this. I wasn’t familiar with this quote, but it reflects my view that what is important in life is always a mystery. We need to learn to be content with not knowing.
